Retired Policeman
My wife and I recently traveled to Brazil from Glasgow, England, in search of an exiting tropical hideaway (our 40th Anniversary). After doing a lot of Internet research I found many possible destinations to stay, but few seemed to have the incredible charm of the Porto Seguro - Arrial D’Ajuda region. Porto Seguro was the place were Brazil was discovered by the Portuguese, and coincidentally, it is also one of the most beautiful spots of that country.

Porto Seguro has great web sites about hotels or pousadas for anyone who likes to discover the very best places. After my wife and I viewed all our choices, we decided to try several hotels within the region but this review is based on the one we liked the most - Casa Blanca Park. This hotel is ideally located, since it is at close distance from everything, such as shops, banks, restaurants, the famous ‘Pasarela do Alcohol,’ the ‘Cidade Historica,’ etc. We always went out to eat, so cannot critique the food at their restaurant. This hotel has a wonderful staff, it is very clean, and they are willing to assist with any questions. In all our years traveling, we have never found ‘the’ perfect hotel, and the Casa Blanca does have some negatives worth mentioning. Both my wife and I came to the same conclusions, the hotel was constructed too close to the town’s busiest road (right on top of it), and there were too many young kids screaming in the pool at all hours of the day which made sleeping at times all but impossible. Again, some travelers may be used to this, so it may not matter.

As a retired policeman, the habit of wanting to protect my fellow humans from villains is always present. We had an experience all foreigners traveling to Porto Seguro should know about. As a matter of fact, if you are from a non-english speaking country but understand english, I BEG YOU to translate this warning in your language so your fellow citizens are aware. One morning when we were walking to the center of town we experienced an incredible scene, a blitz by the Policia Federal (very much like Scotland Yard) on a business called Investimovel, the best known real estate agency in the entire region, and a business establishment we were planning to visit since we continue to be interested in oceanfront property (rather inexpensive in Brazil). Thank goodness we got to see this blitz with our own eyes.

It was simply amazing to see the number of policeman with heavy weapons, like if they were going to war. Not sure what was going on but the story was later published in local newspapers and several websites. Apparently Investimovel and the owners, Antonio Navarro and his sister Luciana, were arrested (and then later released until the trial) after being charged with laundering millions of reais. The police confiscated all papers and computers in their offices and also searched their homes plus their other office in Arrial D’Ajuda. What should be real disturbing to any foreigner interested in buying property in that part of Brazil is that Antonio and Luciana Navarro continue to do business as if nothing has happened. As a matter of fact, the day following the blitz, we witnessed new computers being carried into those offices. The Investimovel website has incredible presence in the Internet and always comes up near the top when doing a Google search of that area. All visitors to this region should know what we were told...Mr. Navarro and his sister are very good at convincing foreigners to wire their payments to foreign bank accounts in return for a discount. Here is the problem with such maneuver. It was revealed in one of the articles that the Policia Federal and the Receita Federal (the government’s tax collection agency) will be conducting investigations on all those foreigners and I’m not sure if these investigations will take place with the assistance of foreign police agencies. So making payments to foreign accounts could become a serious problem for the innocent. Most admit that curiosity got the best of me, so I could not help but to find out what this Antonio and Luciana Navarro were really like. It did not take long, after asking for less than half an hour, the description was almost unanimous, they were described as real arrogant and are widely regarded as ‘vigaristas,’ a brazilian word meaning crooks, particularly Antonio, who supposedly is blessed with great charisma and is a very convincing lier. Someone also told me that Antonio is involved in numerous court cases for different types of illegal acts, but more important to foreigners buying from Investimovel, they have also been accused of FALSIFYING PROPERTY DOCUMENTS, such as deeds and titles, something also hinted in one of the written articles. So to all my english countryman as well as foreign friends, PLEASE BEWARE of this real estate agency and the two criminals who run it. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THEM!

If anyone reading this review has a way of circulating this information around the globe through other Internet sources, you will be helping thousands of naive travelers who visit Porto Seguro from all corners of the world in search of paradise.
