Island of Itamaraca - Bahia
Itamaraca Island is formed by several beaches; most of them have crystal clear calm waters.
It is located in Pernambuco State and was founded in 1958. It has approximately 18.412 inhabitants.
The best of the local gastronomy is found in the different kiosks at the beach. Several groups of axe and pagoda music have shows in summer; thousand of teens are gathered in front of the main square of the island. In the carnival, the electric trios poured this place. But the best cultural attraction continues being the ciranda queen, doña Lia de Itamaracá.
The Orange Fortress, built by the Dutchmen in 1631, keeps the register of the fights between Portuguese and flamencos, region that prospered in the cane plantations and the exportation of Pau-Brazil.
The green sea that surrounds the island is full of seaweeds. But the great sandbank of “Coroa do Aviao” has blue waters without seaweeds. At Sossego beach, natural pools favor delightful baths of salt water.
The island protects the Preservação Peixe-boi Marinho (preservation center), opens to visitors that appreciate these docile animals before they return to their natural habitat.
It is 49Km from Recife, capital of the state. The access is by highway BR-101 North and PE-35 after Abreu and Lima cities.
