Fortaleza is commonly known as the capital of forró, a folkloric rhythm that was created by local fishermen. In such melody, the accordion plays an essential part.
This city was born during the war between Dutch and Portuguese people, for the conquer of the territory of Ceara, in the middles of The XVII Century.
Since then, a military edification - The Fortress of Schoonenborch - turned into a symbol of power and resistance; that was an inspiration at the moment of choosing the name of the city.
This fortress was built in 1649 with the purpose of consolidating the presence of the Dutch Crown in this part of South America.
The antique community, lately transformed into a city, received the name of Fortaleza de Nuestra Señora de Asunción. Nowadays, it is known just as Fortaleza.
This city is situated under the Equatorial Line, being the farthest tourist city in the north west region of Brazil.
