Maracaná Stadium - Rio de Janeiro
It is recognized, by many soccer fans, as "The Gods´ Temple".
It is one of the biggest stadiums in the world.
It was constructed in 1950 to be the centre of the World Coup and to be able to receive 166.369 people approximately. In the present time, after some reforms, it can lodge 114.145 spectators.
The principal access to the Stadium follows The Profesor Eurico Rabelo Street, gate 16. It is being reformatted again in order to be the centre of The Pan-American Games and its competitions in 2007. More information about this subject: (+55 21) 2299-2941.
Tijuca National Park
The Tijuca Forest, also called Tijuca National Park, is the remain of the Tropical Rainforest that bordered Rio de Janeiro.
It is the major natural reserve of the city.
The Park extends itself over 120 kilometres of exuberant forest and leafy vegetation.
It is possible to arrive there from Copacabana in 15 minutes.
Some other nice places to stopover are: The Mayrink Chapel, The Mirador Excelsior, The Barracao, The Paulo and Virginia´s Cave, The Fairies´ Lake, The Vista China and The Embalse de la Soledad.
To arrive to these sites, it is necessary to go through the regions of Redentor, Canoa and Castorina.
Piedra Bonita
It is covered by dense vegetation. It has a good view to the sea.
It is an ideal place to practice parapente and delta fly. The flights last 15 or 45 minutes depending on the wind conditions.
Paquetá Island
It is placed to the north side of the city.
The access to the island can be achieved by bicycle (it is possible to rent one), by foot or by carriage. Cars are not allowed.
The island is well known because of its colonial buildings and calm beaches.
