Beaches of Rio - Rio de Janeiro
This city is very popular because of its typical carioca beaches. Among them, it is possible to mention the followings:
Copacabana
This is a world famous beach. It is a frequented place by foreign tourists. Its wide border of sand extends itself from The Princesa Isabel Avenue until The Fort of Copacabana. Many soccer and volleyball camps are placed all over the beach.
Ipanema
Ipanema is located all along The Vieira Souto Avenue, near Copacabana and separated from it by the beaches of Arpoador and Leblon. This is a very quiet beach. Compared to Copacabana, it is more secure, clean and expensive. Its sand is clear and its waves are big and strong, consequently, precaution is recommended at the moment of swimming.
The most agitate point of the beach is called Posto 9 (placed on The Farme de Amoedo Street). It contains many bars and restaurants. This location is frequented by the gay community. This beach has been the centre of great events like The World Competition of Beach Volley.
Botafogo
This is an urban beach that is very contaminated. It has a wonderful view to The Corcovado and The Päo de Azucar.
Botafogo beach is one of the favourite places for diverse spectacles and concerts organized in front of the sea. Talking about the sea, it is very calm and ideal for some water sports.
Leblon
It is located between The Morro Dois Irmaos and the channel that joins The Rodrigo de Freitas Lake with the sea. The beach is 1.3 kilometres long, with clear sand and big waves. Its roadway is very frequented, specially, on Sundays.
Prainiha
This beach is surrounded by mounts. It is a very recommended site for surfing.
Arpoador
It is placed in the south-east region of Copacabana, among The Copacabana´s Fort, The Francisco Otaviano Street and The Vieira Souto Avenue. It has 500 meters of clear sand. It is well known because of a big rock situated in the middle of the sea that separates this beach from The Copacabana beach.
This site contains a park where national and international artists make different presentations. Regularly, the Arpoador is the centre of many national and international surfing competitions since its sea possesses perfect waves (big, strong and with optimal formations) for this particular practice.
Sao Conrado
This beach is located near to The Morro dos Irmaos, Pedra da Gavea and Rocinha. Its access has to be done through The Niemeyer Avenue. It has 600 meters of clear sand.
Grumari
This is one of the most isolate beaches of Rio de Janeiro. Its main characteristic is the topography composed by mountains and abundant vegetation. It has been considered an area of Environmental Preservation.
To the south, there are some other beautiful beaches: Recréio, Prainha and Marambaia. These places are particularly crowded on weekends. Public transport services do not go there. Prainha beach is one of the best locations for surfing.
Abricó
It is situated in the left extreme of the city. It is a beach for nudists.
Barra de la Tijuca
This is the largest beach of Rio de Janeiro: it is 18 kilometres long. Its waters are clean, with a green tonality and its waves are big; this last aspect makes this site ideal for surfing, windsurfing, bodyboarding and fishing.
Saquarema
This is a balneary which is placed 100 kilometres from Rio de Janeiro. This beach is popularly called The Capital of Surfing. It presents a brave sea with big waves.
In this sense, Saquarema is a recommended place for nautical sports: surfing, fishing, windsurfing and so on. The weather there is tropical and its altitude is 10 meters.
