Bahia

Bahía - Brasil

It is a 932 kilometre littoral irrigated by The Atlantic Ocean. It is divided in two bays with more than a hundred islands and several river outfalls.

All along 300 years, between The XVI and XVIII Centuries, Bahia, whose capital is Salvador, was considered the second most important city of The Portuguese Empire, after Lisboa.

It used to be a world centre of sugar commercialisation. It was famous because of its Churches plenty of gold, its paradisiacal marine sites, its beautiful villas and its excitant festivals.

Bahia is known as the most African State of Brazil.

Its architectonic treasures have been denominated Human Cultural Patrimony by The UNESCO.

Visitors can traverse the city and observe some of the 34 colonial churches and The Afro-Brazilian Museum dedicated to the black culture.

Thousand kilometres of incredible beaches are capable to cover every expectative.

"Brazil was born here" was a publicity slogan applied to Bahia that talks about the ancient origins of Brazil.

The Carnival of Salvador is very popular, it concentrates thousands of tourists every year.

The Gastrology of Bahia

The cookery in Bahia presents a strong African influence. This is a typical Brasilian food. Among the most popular specialities, it is possible to mention: Moquecas (boiled fish and camaron well flavoured), Bobó de camarón (boiled camaron with sauce of mandioca, a popular tubercle), Sarapatel (a dish made of pig´s meat), Vatapá (A cream made of peanut), and Pastelillo (a fried patty made of camaron, pepper and seeds).
